Managing a Careers Service
Petrus Communications is organising a 2 day workshop on the theme “Managing a Careers Service”. Held in 2007 and 2008 with great success, this workshop is a key development and networking opportunity if you work in the field of internships and graduate employability.
Course description
A careers service may be a person, a group of people, a physical place, a virtual place (on-line or a network) or a combination of these. The main objectives of a careers service include providing career advice, contacts to the labour market and training to the students of their institution.
To meet these objectives, institutions need to build strong links with business and industry, as well as supporting the careers development of staff, and even alumni. This course covers the strategic, financial and managerial requirements for a Careers Service to meet these challenging expectations, and will look at a range of models of funding and development which can be adapted to meet the needs of different kinds of institution and all the key stakeholders.
Course description
A careers service may be a person, a group of people, a physical place, a virtual place (on-line or a network) or a combination of these. The main objectives of a careers service include: providing career advice, contacts to the labour market and training to the students of their institution. The careers service is also in a unique position to facilitate interaction and exchange between education and industry with the overall aim of enhancing the employability of students from that institution, perhaps also supporting the development of institutional staff themselves. This training course will cover the actions needed to establish and to manage an effective careers service, whatever the institutional circumstances are.
Topics
The content will be tailored to allow all participants with some experience to have a better insight in the strategic and management aspects of their service, delivering employability skills to enhance the overall reputation of the institution, and relationships with key stakeholders. The areas to be covered are:
1. Careers service models and stakeholders
Central administration, student counselling, science transfer, internship office, alumni office, private/public partnership
2. Service description and best practice in service provision
Career service tasks (ie counselling, training, placement, events, fund raising etc)
Advantages for universities, faculties, students and alumni
3. Management
Director and staff functions, qualifications, development
IT office management, databases, legal considerations
4. Marketing and PR
Internal: ensuring you are able to deliver on your promises to external partners and benefit all areas of the institution
External: ensuring external partners are aware of your services, cost and benefits
5. Relationships and international networks

Creating a network with local industry around your institution

Raising funds via the recruitment services you offer to companies
Learning outcomes
As a participant you will be able to identify the role of the careers service in your institution and which specific services you should offer. You will learn what is recognised as ‘best practice’ when providing those services, and how to communicate activities to key stakeholders – that is, the institution, students/graduates and companies. Participants will also get an introduction to the financial, legal, managerial and organisational aspects of a careers service with references to useful resources, to allow you to further develop this area for yourself. The handouts and course materials are designed to allow all participants to develop a relevant action plan during the course to take back to your institution.
Course format
Prior to attending, all participants will complete a questionnaire so that the course content can be tailored as much as possible to your actual situation. The course is structured to offer many interactive learning and networking opportunities, such as:
- Interactive group discussions and practical exercises
- Case studies to explore the practical application of the concepts discussed as well as sharing experience with other participants
- A round table discussion to allow questions on different careers service models, the views of employers and institutional partners.

Leo studied Philosophy at the University of Tilburg, The Netherlands. He also completed postgraduate studies in the field of general management and personnel management. Since 2002 he is the Director of EUFLEX Employment Services in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. From 1997–2002 he was head of the international office at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Before that he was responsible for projects in developing countries for the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
Paul Blackmore, Lancaster University, United Kingdom
Paul is Director of the Centre for Employability Enterprise and Careers (CEEC) at Lancaster University.
He has 20 years of experience working with and within industry, R&D and higher education; supplying services relating to skills development, training needs analysis and the recruitment of students and graduates across all labour markets.
Paul also has over 10 years of experience in managing career development programmes and services for prospective employers, the student, graduate applicants and recruits.
He has managed several regional projects and higher education partnerships relating to graduate self-employment, HR business support for small and medium-sized enterprises and collaborative on-line vacancy brokerage services. He is a frequent speaker and trainer at national and international events on issues relating to the development of employer liaison strategies and related services.
Paul is the author of several publications and papers regarding the use of corporate internet technologies for networked collaborative learning, working and personal development.
